Luxury self-catering accommodation in Leicestershire
Lazy days on the canal, wild animal chasing and poking around gourmet towns; this county right in the middle of England has plenty to offer.
To the east of Birmingham and just south of Nottingham, this compact county includes some of mid-England's major towns, think Loughborough, Market Harborough and Leicester itself. Children are especially well-catered for, with theme parks and attractions dotted about the county. Twycross Zoo, over on the Leicestershire and Warwickshire border, has more than 500 animals, including endangered species and a rare big cat. There are workshops and clubs here for would-be keepers of all ages, plus a Butterfly Forest and Penguin Parade.
A great way to view the scenery is by narrowboat; the River Soar runs through Leicester where it meets the Grand Union Canal, and the Market Harborough arm of the waterway has a lock-free stretch so boaters can relax for a spell. Hop off here for a walk around the restored Union Wharf, housing trendy flats and galleries, do keep an eye out for the quirky sundial. To the east, Melton Mowbray's food-tastic town hosts festivals in honour of cheese, chocolate and pies. After a day of boating, pick up some treats for a picnic in the garden of your luxury hired home.
